Service leadership

Service leadership is about leading by helping and supporting others. Instead of making your power the focus of the group or team, as a service leader you would aim to make a positive impact on your team, the people, and the community as a whole. Service leaders lead with integrity, care, and a genuine desire to help others grow and succeed.

The importance of service leadership is that it builds trust, strong relationships, all while creating lasting change. Leaders who try to encourage growth, inspire teamwork, and make a difference, create a more positive and supportive environment.

A service mindset affects a leader’s approach to leadership because instead of a mindset focused on authority, their mindset focuses on making an impact. Leaders with this mindset often listen to others, support their needs, and collaborate to solve problems. An environment is created where people feel motivated, valued, and empowered to speak up and contribute.

Leadership roles

Taking on leadership roles has not always been the easiest for me because I often shape myself to meet others’ wants and expectations. However, my grandmother has inspired me to just be me and get out of my comfort zone. She taught me that true leadership is not about seeking approval or wanting perfection, but about empowering others to be themselves and creating a safe space for imperfections. Leadership is rooted in authenticity, compassion, and care. Using your differences to create an impact.

Class Representative

I was in Student Government Association (SGA) as Class Representative. I was responsible for attending weekly meetings with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) every Thursday, where I represented the student body by providing input on upcoming events, activities, and concerns brought up to me by classmates. I attended SGA meetings every Thursday to collaborate with my team on planning school events and discussing key topics I needed to address during the PTA meetings.

HOBY Ambassador

At HOBY, I represented my school and learned about leadership. I contributed to discussions, service projects, and group activities. I enjoyed discussing how I could have a positive impact on the community. While as an ambassador I mainly learned about leadership, every single ambassador took on the role of being a leader. I took on the leadership by stepping up during some projects to help and volunteering to do the public speaking segment for my group. At HOBY, I learned and took on the role of being a leader.

HCC Attendee

While I did not take on a leadership role at the Health Careers Convention (HCC), I learned about leadership in the medical field. They thought me about efficiency, accuracy, and most importantly, learning from your mistakes. Accidents in the medical field is bond to happen, it’s important to accept them and learn from them. I attended many different meetings, listening and asking questions to many medical professionals. Each and every one of them were different, yet they all approached leadership with confidence and knowledge.

Volunteering

1

Bay Pointe Nursing Pavilion

240 Hours Total

(5 hours/week/1 year)

I cared for and entertained residents through activities like bingo, balloon toss, and helping during mealtime. Providing essential care, emotional support, and reducing isolation.

2

Run for the Beaches

3 Hours Total

(1 day event)

I was responsible for directing the runners in the correct direction, passing out medals, and giving them motivation throughout the relatively long run.

3

Turkey Trot

4 Hours Total

(1 day event)

My focus was passing out water and medals to the runners when they got to the finish line. At the end, I helped with cleaning up the venue.

The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already.
